“General Motors’ thundering 420-horsepower V-8 in the Silverado exemplifies how engineers continue to find ways to improve efficiency without giving up something in return.” – Drew Winter, Senior Content Director
The editors at WardsAuto look at every all-new or significantly improved engine that is available in U.S. production models that have a starting MSRP of less than $64,000. Then, the editors agree on a score for the engine based on horsepower, torque, technology, observed fuel efficiency, competitiveness and noise. The top 10 engines are then named to their list and are awarded as a Best Engine. And for the 2019 list, the 6.2-liter V8 engine was chosen.
Learn More: How does Dynamic Fuel Management work?
A very important feature of the 6.2-liter V8 engine is that it comes equipped with the Dynamic Fuel Management (DFM) system that is compared to the Active Fuel Management system. DFM, unlike AFM which only has an 8-cylinder or 4-cylinder mode, features 17 different cylinder patterns that constantly work to optimize efficiency and power that is delivered at all speeds. According to Jordan Lee, Small Block chief engineer, “Dynamic Fuel Management enables only the cylinders needed to deliver the power you want, seamlessly delivering the best balance of power and fuel economy.”
Overall, the 6.2-liter with DFM is the largest and most powerful gas V8 engine in the segment and is available with the 2019 Chevy Silverado. It is able to produce up to 420-horsepower and deliver up to 460 pound-feet of torque. The engine is paired with the Hydra-Matic 10-speed automatic transmission for enhanced handling and control.
