What Does the Fuel System Do?
The fuel system in you vehicle stores and maintains the fuel for your engine to burn to power your car. There are four main components that make up the fuel system:
- Fuel Tank
- Fuel Pump
- Fuel Injector
- Fuel Lines
The fuel system is responsible for taking the stored fuel and delivering it to the cylinder chamber. Once it reaches the cylinder chamber the fuel is vaporized, combined with air, and then burned to create power for your car to run. When you step on the gas pedal, the fuel in the fuel tank runs through the fuel lines into the fuel pump. Once the right amount of fuel reaches the fuel filter it enters the fuel injector. The fuel injector then uses pressure to distribute gasoline into the intake manifold inside the engine. It is then transferred to the proper cylinder in order to be burned to produce power for the vehicle.
Fuel System Maintenance for Your Car this Summer
If your fuel system is not functioning properly or a specific part of it is broken, you could be putting your safety in danger and repairs may be costly. Here are a few fuel system failure signs that can save you some cash down the line:
- Your vehicle won’t start or stalls while running
- Fuel economy is lower than normal
- Smoke comes from the engine
- Check engine light comes on
- Intermittent power loss occurs
- Vehicle is jerky or surges while traveling at a steady speed
- Power loss while accelerating
- High engine temperature
If you have noticed any of these problems in your vehicle, you should get your vehicle serviced as soon as possible, as your safety could be at risk. If you haven’t noticed these signs, there are still routine maintenance checks that should be done regularly to avoid future problems with your vehicle’s fuel system. We want to make sure your car is running as fuel efficiently as possible for all of your summer adventures.
Having your fuel system cleaned and your fuel filter replaced is also very important to your fuel system maintenance. We recommend replacing your filter every 30,000 miles or every 2 years as a precautionary maintenance measure. We also recommend scheduling a fuel system cleaning if you suspect there is something wrong with your vehicle’s fuel system. There is no specific interval at which fuel system cleanings should be completed, but having it done removes fuel varnish buildup and reduces cylinder head deposits. Our team at Graff Chevrolet Durand would be happy to check your fuel filter or fuel system status!
