Get Your Kids Ready to Go Back to School - 08/28/2015

Get Your Kids Ready to Go Back to School

DURAND, Mich. – The weather is turning, soon the leaves will follow suit, and a harbinger of autumn is in sight: the first day of school. Do yourself a favor and help your kids prepare in advance for the school year, thereby avoiding chaos the night before the first day. Here’s how you can get your kids ready to go back to school.

    What’s for lunch?
Instead of throwing together a smorgasbord of snacks and potentially an apple for your kids’ lunches the morning of, plan out what you can pack for them a week ahead. This gives you time to ensure they get a share of each healthy food group, plus allows room for them to choose one or two items they prefer. Make the lunches the night before and keep your morning meltdown-free.

    Are backpacks packed?
Your kids are bound to forget something they need on the firs day of school – a book, pencils, a ruler – which is why you should round them up and get everything situated before the first day of class. Help your kids pack their backpacks with the necessary school supplies and books a day or two before the first day. Everything will be ready the morning of and all your kids will have to do is sling their backpacks on their shoulders and head out the door.

    No more staying up late.
It’s one thing to get lunches and backpacks ready, but the hardest thing for kids is simply waking up early enough for school. You don’t want to bother with storming into your kids’ bedrooms three times before they finally listen and get out of bed. The best way to avoid your kids being late on their first day of school is to adjust their sleeping schedule now, and no later. Start putting your kids to bed earlier and waking them up earlier. By the time the first day of school hits, they should be ready to rise and shine without giving pushback.

Don’t wait to calm their nerves.
To kids, school is like a dark, ominous raincloud moving in over their summer beach party. Help them shake off that idea and learn to enjoy their school environment. The last thing you want to happen is for your kids to pout or give you trouble getting out the door because they’re nervous about the first day of school. Prepare your kids by having a casual talk with them about why they’re nervous or excited for school. Have them lay it all on the table, expose their feelings, and it may help them feel like a burden was lifted. They’ll walk into class with a clear mind and more confidence.

These are just some of the major tactics you can use to get your kids ready to go back to school. Hopefully they spark other ideas that you can leverage to prepare your kids for the school year. Feel free to comment below if you have other tips for parents helping their kids prepare to go back to school. Remember, after you drop your young scholars off at school, stop in at our Genesee County area used car dealer for an oil change or any other auto service you need – for once without the kids in the backseat fighting.

Graduate of General Motors Institute in Flint Develops Fuel-Efficient Vehicle that Gets 84 mpg - 08/21/2015

Graduate of General Motors Institute in Flint Develops Fuel-Efficient Vehicle
DURAND, Mich. – Twenty years ago in Flint, MI, General Motors Institute – now Kettering University – served as the seminal start of a journey that jumpstarted Paul Elio’s dream. The graduate of General Motors Institute in Flint developed a fuel-efficient vehicle that gets 84 mpg. Even better, Elio, the founder and CEO of Elio Motors, plans to sell the vehicle for a mere $6,800.

Despite Elio’s vehicle being labeled a “game-changer,” it has some drawbacks, although they’re necessary for the vehicle to be as cheap and efficient as it is. Elio’s vehicle has only three wheels, and can seat only two people, which might be trivial to plenty of drivers anyway.

Elio Motors website claims the vehicle’s ability to achieve 84 mpg is “simple physics.” Who knows what the scientific equations were that led Elio to develop such a brilliant vehicle, but we’re guessing the graduate of General Motors Institute in Flint developed a fuel-efficient vehicle through the lessons he learned at his alma mater.

Elio expects to launch his vehicle into production by 2016, but he still needs investors to help him reach that point. Fortunately, he has plenty of support from suppliers in metro Detroit as well as a staff-ready factory in Shreveport, LA.

Along with a growing following of backers, Elio’s vehicle already has 45,000 reservations from intrigued drivers anticipating its debut. He expects the vehicle will appeal to four market segments: new car buyers, used car buyers, car buyers with a limited budget, and car buyers looking for a secondary vehicle.

GMI in Flint was a starting point for Elio, but he’s since moved out of the mitten and now resides in Phoenix. Finding the road to success wasn’t simple for the entrepreneur, but after a slew of jobs before attending and graduating from GMI, Elio has carved out – and nearly conquered – a niche market for his product.

We love seeing members of the Flint community go on to lead successful lives around Michigan and beyond. Elio’s story of determination along with GM’s uptick in Flint-area investments has us growing more excited about the future of this city and its surrounding suburbs. That’s why we’re proud to be a Flint area Chevy dealership that provides a great inventory of new Chevy cars and new Chevy trucks to the people in this community.

GM Plans to Renovate Durant-Dort Factory One near Downtown Flint - 08/19/2015

GM Plans to Renovate Durant-Dort Factory One near Downtown Flint
    © General Motors

DURAND, Mich. – William Durant founded General Motors way back in 1908 in Flint, Mich., but before his prestige in manufacturing that constituted the pinnacle of competitive automotive industrialism, Durant cut his teeth manufacturing carriages under Durant-Dort Carriage Company with his business partner Josiah Dort.

Now GM plans to renovate Durant-Dort Factory One near downtown Flint, the same factory where Durant first produced carriages before changing the automotive industry forever.

GM will invest millions of dollars to repurpose the factory, which will serve as an archive for an impressive automotive collection presently under supervision at Kettering University in Flint. It also could potentially serve as a GM research center.

The second floor of the factory’s east wing will become a meeting area for GM leader, community and educational groups to hold STEM-related classes, seminars, and potentially research.

GM will revamp the high-bay area of the factory’s west wing, which will contain classic vehicles and other historical vestiges of Flint from the era of Durant’s fledgling carriage business to the pinnacle of his success as GM’s founder.

GM purchased the factory in 2013 and has since invested $3 million to restore the exterior with new windows and doors, plus the installation of a fence around a GM-owned parking lot across Water Street.

Before tackling the interior project, GM will work with architects from SmithGroupJJR, based in Ann Arbor, Mich., who have experience rejuvenating historic buildings and constructing contemporary archives. GM plans to renovate the interior of Durant-Dort Factory One near downtown Flint in early 2016, and expects a completion date to appear sometime in 2017.

GM will also renovate the Durant-Dort Carriage Company office building across the street from the factory. Their investment in the factory dovetails with a series of investments around Flint, including $2 million into Kettering University to develop a powertrain laboratory, $2 million into Kettering by 2018 for an automotive proving ground for students, and $877 million into Flint Assembly for a new body shop.

With the uproar of activity occurring in and around Flint, we truly believe this community is on the cusp of serious revitalization. We absolutely love being a Flint area Chevy dealer with an awesome inventory of new Chevy cars and trucks, and we can't wait to see what GM does for its hometown.

Chevrolet Corvette Will Be One of the Last Performance Vehicles to Become Driverless - 08/14/2015

Chevrolet Corvette One of the Last Performance Vehicles to Become Driverless
    © General Motors

DURAND, Mich. – Whether you like it or not, autonomous vehicles are quickly becoming a reality, and automotive executives predict driverless technology will be commonplace within the next 20 years.

It’s to the chagrin of many drivers who would prefer autonomous vehicles hit the road and drive far, far away from civilization. Bitterness fathoms from drivers who relish having control over their vehicles and fear that autonomous vehicle technology will strip them of the driving experience.

Fortunately, performance vehicles are untouchable right now, essentially out of reverence for their outstanding performance and style. These vehicles are manufactured to grant driver's enjoyment and control, which is why the Chevrolet Corvette will be one of the last performance vehicles to become driverless.

The news comes from comments made by Tadge Jeuchter, chief engineer for the Corvette, according to The Detroit News.

“We probably as a group will be the last to adopt autonomous technology,” Juechter said. “The whole purpose of our cars is to enjoy the driving experience, not to check out your email while you’re moving from one place to the other.”

Executives from Ford Motor Co. and Dodge joined Jeuchter to discuss the future of performance cars in the auto industry during “Horsepower Wars,” an annual business breakfast held by WWJ-950 at Duggan’s Irish in Royal Oak, Mich. The executives all agreed that one thing is very clear, despite all of ruckus over driverless cars – We’re living in the pinnacle age for performance vehicles. No wonder Juechter said the Chevrolet Corvette would be one of the last performance vehicles to become driverless.

Regardless of how quickly autonomous vehicle technology can transform the automotive landscape, vehicles will always need routine maintenance – driverless or not. Make sure you get into our Genesee county area used car dealer for regular oil changes and any other auto service your car may need!

Chevy is Prepared to Help Cruisers at the 2015 Woodward Dream Cruise - 08/12/2015

Chevy is Prepared to Help Cruisers at the 2015 Woodward Dream Cruise
    © General Motors

DURAND, Mich. – Although we’re getting revved up for Back to the Bricks, happening this week in downtown Flint, Mich., we know many of you may be heading down to the Detroit area for the world-famous annual Woodward Dream Cruise presented by Chevrolet for the fifth year on Saturday, Aug. 15.

As the official presenting sponsor, Chevy is prepared to help cruisers at the 2015 Woodward Dream Cruise with its Chevrolet Certified Service Rescue Squad. The fleet of six 2015 Silverado pickup trucks will be on hand to assist any cruisers whose classic vehicle stalls, overheats, runs out of gas along Woodward Ave. on the day of the cruise.

Although Chevy is prepared to help cruisers at the 2015 Woodward Dream Cruise, the automaker would prefer to see cruisers enjoy the day rather than get bogged down by nightmarish car trouble – after all, this is the Dream Cruise. Here are some tips Chevy recommends cruisers heed before they hit the strip:

    • Battery – Ensure that your battery is charged, the terminals are clean, and the alternator belt and distributor cap are free of any unusual wear or aging.
    • Fluids – Measure your cruiser’s fluid levels and make sure they’re at the proper levels. Bring extra fluids for top-offs to ensure that your cruiser is capable of operating for several hours.
    • Gas – Don’t start cruising without a full tank, and beware of inaccurate gas gauges that can be common in classic cars due to their old age.
    • Tires – Make sure your tire pressure is good and isn’t leaking. Check for any abnormalities such as cracks.
    • Wiper Blades – Hopefully the sky stays blue, but in the case of rain you’ll want a pair of well-functioning wiper blades.

In the event that your cruiser does run into an inconvenient issue, you can rest assured that your vehicles will be in good hands when the Rescue Squad comes around. The Rescue Squad is made up of ASE certified technicians from local Chevy dealerships, and you know how great Chevy dealership service is – just look at Hank Graff Chevrolet Durand!

Before you head off to the Woodward Dream Cruise, feel free to stop in at our Clio area used car dealer where you can get all of your pre-cruise auto service taken care of, including oil change, tires, brakes, and other miscellaneous car repair!

The Midnight Edition reveals the dark side the 2016 Colorado, and accentuates the stalwart design of the pickup. Like the rest of the truck, the blacked-out grille, Chevy bow tie, and 18-inch aluminum wheels add to the Midnight Edition’s tough image. In addition, you get a durable spray-on bed liner, folding tonneau cover, and Chevy-logo sill plates with this edition.

The simplest way to describe the Z71 Trail Boss is to say it looks exactly how you would assume it performs on the roughest terrains. Its rugged looks are an obvious brag about the 2016 Colorado’s athleticism, which is presented through a sport bar with LED trail lighting; black-finished 17-inch aluminum wheels with Goodyear Wrangler DuraTrac 265/65R17 all terrain tires; fender flares; tubular assist steps; and all-weather floor mats. Like its blacked-out evil twin, the Trail Boss also boasts a black Chevy bow tie and spray-on bed liner.

We understand your apprehension about the dependability of an electric system as opposed to sticking with the traditional gasoline engine, but the 2016 Chevrolet Volt achieves impressive fuel economy that could change your mind.

Here’s why you should love the Volt: You can drive it 53 miles on pure electricity, up 15 miles from the current Volt, but even more convincing is the Volt achieves 106 miles per gallon electric when you combine the electric drive modes and gasoline operation. On top of that, you get 42 mpg without using the electric drive modes, so either way you’re getting amazing gas mileage.

Right now, Volt owners drive on the vehicle's battery 80 percent of the time. Chevrolet expects that number to increase to 90 percent with the 2016 Volt, and projects it will be capable of traveling 1,000 miles before needing a gas fill-up.

Those are some hefty claims, but the new Volt’s 246-pound weight loss and a new, more efficient 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine definitely play into the improved mpg specifications. Comparatively, the new Volt gets 106 mpg combined to the current Volt’s 37 mpg combined –– that’s a serious upgrade.

The caveat is you’ll end up paying $33,995 for the new Volt, which is more than the current model. However, it seems completely worth it when the 2016 Chevrolet Volt achieves impressive fuel economy, plus the price really isn’t too steep considering how much other comparable sedans cost. You can order yours sometime between late August and fall 2015 at our Clio area Chevy dealer where we also have plenty of certified pre-owned cars and trucks.

Chevrolet Invests $5 Billion into New Vehicle Development - 07/29/2015

Chevrolet Invests $5 Billion into New Vehicle Development
    © Copyright General Motors

DURAND, Mich.– Since its inception, the auto industry has been in perpetual motion to accommodate the influx of new technology and changes in consumer preferences. General Motors brands have always adjusted well to these demands, and the latest example is how Chevrolet will invest $5 billion into new vehicle development for global growth markets. It's a step GM and Chevy will take to stay ahead of the curve, so to speak, and ensure consumers in these markets that Chevy is the brand they can rely on for design, technology and performance.

Chevy will develop an entirely new vehicle family for these markets that will take the place of multiple current vehicles. Chevy anticipates the new vehicle family will sharpen its competitive edge and increase profitability.

Along with Chevrolet investing $5 billion into new vehicle development, GM will deepen its partnership with SAIC Motor and the two will collaborate on the new vehicle family’s core architecture and engine design. The closer relationship will add to GM’s architecture consolidation plan, and save them money in development and total vehicle costs.

By using a team of multinational designers, the new Chevy vehicle family will be extremely comprehensive in its market appeal. In short, the vehicles will be very cosmopolitan with rich influences from a variety of cultures and interests deriving from multiple nationalities.

Chevy plans to manufacture and sell the vehicles in Brazil, China, India and Mexico, and export to several other growth markets. However, you won’t see these vehicles anywhere in the United States, which is already a mature market and has no need for a completely new vehicle family.

But don’t feel left out– consider all of the New Chevy Carsand New Chevy Trucks you have to choose from in each model year! We promise you, the Chevy vehicles available at our Corunna area Chevrolet dealer are the best offerings from the automaker.

Rumored 2016 Chevy Camaro Release Date - 07/24/2015

Rumored 2016 Chevy Camaro Release Date
    © Copyright General Motors

DURAND, Mich.– Despite the general excitement surrounding a slew of new 2016 model year vehicle releases from nearly every major automaker, the 2016 Chevrolet Camaro has stolen the spotlight from competitors and other vehicle classes alike.

Now, the spotlight is brighter than ever since an unnamed insider from Chevy recently disclosed a rumored 2016 Chevy Camaro release dateof August 13, although General Motors hasn’t corroborated the claim or denied it. At the Camaro’s unveiling in Detroit last May, Chevy divulged plans to begin 2016 Camaro production in Lansing, MI, this August, so an earlier-than-expected release date, at least for pre-orders, could be very possible.

Since the inaugural Camaro’s 1966 debut, many have claimed Chevy’s pony car has struggled in the shadow of the Ford Mustang. But to understand how superior the Camaro is to the Mustang and other competitors, you only need to consult the sales numbers that show the Camaro has outsold the Mustang since 2010.

How do you get better sales than your competition? Through better design, better technology and better performance. No wonder so many enthusiasts are awaiting a confirmation of the rumored 2016 Chevy Camaro release date– people want this car!

While you can’t wholly rely on the words of one unnamed insider, it’s true that rumors like these usually point towards a reality. We suggest that you keep your eyes peeled and expect Chevy to come out with an official release date sometime in the near future. We can’t wait to add the next-generation Camaro to our inventory of New Chevy Cars and New Chevy Trucks at our Clio Chevrolet dealer!

New Chevy Crossover Coming in 2017 - 07/22/2015

    © Copyright General Motors

DURAND, Mich.– If you haven’t heard yet, there’s a new Chevy crossover coming in 2017, and it will replace your beloved Equinox. But don’t worry, the Equinox isn’t disappearing, it’s just being downsized. That’s right, the 2017 Equinox will be smaller and Chevy’s new 2017 crossover will fit comfortably between the it and the Traverse, Chevy’s largest crossover.

This new plan will broaden Chevy’s crossover options for customers, giving you the choice between the extra small Trax, the Equinox, the new crossover, and the Traverse, making Chevy and Nissan the only automakers to offer four classes in the crossover segment.

Adding a new crossover will give you the option to stick with a crossover the size of the current Equinox, or go with a vehicle slightly smaller with the 2017 Equinox. This will give you more freedom of choice with Chevy, compared to its competitors, such as Ford, who still offer only three crossover options.

We know you’re waiting for some concept images and a name, but nothing has been released for the new Chevy crossover coming in 2017 other than the automaker’s plans to fit it between the Equinox and Traverse.

Something to note is that the 2017 crossover’s presence will be felt across the board at General Motors, as it will also be a base for the Cadillac XT5, slated to replace the SRX next spring, and the new GMC Acadia, which will downsize in 2016.

Downsizing the Equinox and fitting a new crossover between it and the Traverse will give Chevy two 2-row and two 3-row crossovers. Count on the new 2017 Chevy crossover looking just as good as the automaker’s other crossovers. Until then, come browse the inventory of New Chevy Cars and New Chevy Trucks at our Corunna area Chevy dealership!

New Chevrolet Silverado Ads Poke Fun at the Aluminum Ford F-150 - 07/09/2015

New Chevrolet Silverado Ads Poke Fun at the Aluminum Ford F-150
    © Copyright General Motors
DURAND, Mich.– The American economy is ruled by competition, and the auto industry is one facet of the market that is chock full of it, which is why Ford shouldn’t get too upset as the new Chevrolet Silverado ads poke fun at the aluminum Ford F-150– it’s just an extension of their healthy rivalry!

In all seriousness, Ford’s aluminum body idea sounds good in theory, but wouldn’t you feel safer driving a machine made of aluminum’s stronger older brother, Steel? If you think like us, you’d go with the 2015 Chevy Silverado made of steel over the 2015 Ford F-150 made of aluminum, and Chevy did a great job of representing the differences between these two designs through two hilarious ads that appeared online.

The first ad shows real people in materials testing facility where they are asked to examine the durability of two cages, one made of steel and the other of aluminum. After briefly analyzing and comparing the strength of the cages to each other, a 700-pound grizzly bear is released into the facility and the participants are told they’d better pick a cage for protection. Can you guess which cage they chose before being shown a 2015 Chevy Silverado built with steel?

The second ad is more lighthearted, but still gets to the core of the aluminum design issue. Chevy had a handful of comic book fanatics come out to give their opinions on a superhero named Almighty Aluminum Man that they created for a hypothetical movie. It’s a huge joke Chevy uses to allude to Ford’s aluminum truck design, and the comic book lovers don’t hold back their criticism of Almighty Aluminum Man’s weak aluminum design either.

The new Chevrolet Silverado ads poke fun at the aluminum Ford F-150 not because Chevy wants to be the mean neighborhood bully, but because they want you to drive a durable, high strength steel vehicle that will keep you safe on the road. We feel the same way, and that’s why you can get non-aluminum vehicles like New Chevy Trucks and New Chevy Cars at our Clio Area Chevrolet Dealer! Of course, if you’re looking for something made of high strength steel, we feel obligated to mention the 2015 Chevy Silverado is the way to go!

DURAND, Mich.– America has quite an affinity for cars, and many of the country’s fanatics would agree that one particular American classic will never cease as a force to be reckoned with: the Chevrolet Corvette. In celebration of this monumental automobile that first rolled off the assembly line on June 30, 1953, we wanted to take a look at the story of the first Chevrolet Corvette.

A Chevrolet plant in Flint, MI, first began assembling the two-seater 1953 Corvette on June 28, 1953, as one only 300 produced that year. Two days later the first production Corvette entered the automotive pool, and today we’re still seeing ripples from its impact.

The idea for the Corvette emerged in 1951 after a General Motors designer named Harley J. Earl came up with the idea to produce an affordable American sports car that could compete with European monoliths such as MG, Jaguar and Ferrari.

Chevrolet began the story of the first Chevrolet Corvette when they debuted a concept model in January of 1953 at the Waldorf-Astoria Hotel in New York City, where the fiberglass-body, six-cylinder performer piqued the interest of everyone in attendance.

Many wondered where the name “Corvette” originated. According to GM, the name drew influence from a “trim, fleet naval vessel that performed heroic escort and patrol duties during World War II.”

Like its name, the first Corvette was one flashy son-of-an-automobile with its Polo White exterior and red interior, two-speed Powerglide automatic transmission, a wraparound windshield, whitewall tires and removable plastic curtains in lieu of windows.

Unprecedented innovation also bolstered the 1953 Corvette as America’s new sports car, including features like a clock, cigarette lighter and red warning light that turned on when a driver applied the parking brake. While the 1953 Corvette only showed average speed performance, going from zero to 60 mph in 11 or 12 seconds, its unique style and features helped value it at $3,490.

Story of the First Chevrolet Corvette

Despite the Corvette's popularity today, it struggled to gain recognition from the automotive world during the first 2 years of its life. To the chagrin of GM and Chevrolet, the 1953 Corvette got some curious glances but failed to steal the hearts of American motorists.

By 1954 when Chevrolet began mass production of the car at one of their plants in St. Louis, MO, the Corvette’s ho-hum start in the automotive world was still spiraling downward and GM considered abandoning production for good. That is, until a certain rival automotive manufacturer named Ford Motor Company introduced their two-seater Thunderbird.

This competitive threat pushed GM to improve the Corvette. In 1955 they stuck a V-8 engine underneath the Corvette’s hood and never looked back. From then on the Corvette garnered the nickname “America’s sports car” and steadily became an American pop culture symbol continually referenced in media.

The Corvette’s impressive history and its comeback story are an example of what it took for Chevrolet to become the automaker it is today. Chevy’s drive, passion and the guts to do what others haven’t are what make us proud to sell New Chevy Cars and New Chevy Trucks at our Flint Area Chevy Dealership.
